Course Outline

We offer wheel throwing pottery classes that are designed to cater for beginners with no previous experience, however if you have thrown before we can run you through a refresher and you can progress at a more rapid pace.

You will learn to throw simple shapes off the wheel and then how to trim and glaze them. By the end of this course you will have your own hand made vessels (typically cups and/or bowls) to take home. Advanced students are able to progress onto more complex shapes, lidded vessels, larger vessels and sets of pieces.

The classes are kept small with places limited to 10 people per class, so you will have lots of one on one tuition.

The course fee of $535.00 includes the use of studio tool kits, wheels, clay, glazes, 2.5kg of firing.

Students are asked to bring a towel, apron and a willing pair of hands to each class, everything else you need is provided.

Enrolment

Priority is given to our returning students and the remaining seats are open to new students via the enrolment email on a first in, best dressed basis.

If you are applying to do courses with us for the first time we ask you to join the mailing list here - you will then receive an enrolment email from us approximately 2 weeks before the start of each term (there are 4 terms per year).

New bookings can only be made via this process and cannot be made directly via this email.

About Us

Mercator Ceramics School was founded by Ilona and Colin in 2009 when space became available in the freshly renovated 'hard arts' Mercator building within the rolling grounds of the Abbotsford Convent. It has quickly grown into a much visited creative hub where there is always a wheel spinning, a kiln roaring, a glaze being splashed onto a hungry pot or a class full of enthusiastic fledgling potters laughing their way towards mastery. Visit Cone 11 Ceramics to find out more about their professional pottery practice.
